Flight fans booking holidays to Florida this summer have a treat ahead of them, as the Museum of HistoryMiami continues to host its Aviation in Miami: The First 100 Years exhibition until July 22nd. Curated by architect and historian Antolin Garcia Carbonell, the exhibition underlines the importance of Miami in the development of the USA’s aviation industry. Combined with a visit to the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, this will make for an unforgettable holiday for anyone interested in flight and space travel!

From the beginnings of flight in 1911, when Howard Gill soared above the Miami Golf Links in a cloth-wing biplane of Wright Brothers design, to listening to planes the aeroplanes of today landing at Miami International Airport via an interactive control tower link, the HistoryMiami exhibition takes visitors through a thrilling century of aviation. Artefacts from innovators including Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker and Amelia Earheart are on display alongside models of the 1911 Wright Model D and the 1934 Brown B-1 Racer, while visitors can even fly above Miami for themselves in a computer simulation.

The perfect way to complement a flight-themed trip to Florida is by heading on to the Kennedy Space Center for part of the holiday. Here, visitors can experience the feeling of a space shuttle launch for themselves, talk with veteran astronauts about their experiences and see some of the stunning images captured by the Hubble telescope in a 3D IMAX film. While a lockout threatened to sideline basketball for an entire year due to contractual disputes, the National Basketball Association (NBA) managed to strike up an agreement to start the season on Christmas Day 2011 and have a 66-game run that will, as always, include the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic. While Dwight Howard’s Magic continue to press for glory in the NBA Championships, it will probably be 2012 that will see the Heat team claim the silverware with a dream team featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh – all gold medal winners in the Beijing Olympics with the USA. It’s surely a season that’s not to be missed!

Finally, there’s baseball. The long season takes place between March and October and will bring over 50 games to both Tropicana Field – home of the Tampa Bay Rays – and the brand-new Miami Ballpark, which hosts the Miami Marlins. The latter changed their name from the Florida Marlins this year to match the city and new state-of-the-art stadium, which will feature a retracting roof and toughened glass aquariums in the fences behind the batter’s mound. Which family would not want to see that spectacle?
