Chocolate Ice Cream Day, celebrated on June 7th each year, seemed a better day than most to highlight where in Florida sells the best ice cream whether it’s chocolate-flavoured or not!
A holiday in the sun wouldn’t be complete without the obligatory daily ice cream, so we’ve put together a list of top gelaterias, diners and ice cream parlours dotted across the Sunshine State to seriously whet your appetite. From the biggest banana splits to the most sumptuous sundaes, read on to find out where in Florida is pure ice cream heaven.
Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlour and Restaurant
Known as ‘South Florida’s favourite old-fashioned ice cream parlour’, Jaxson’s won’t disappoint. Tuck into enormous scoops of rich, creamy sundaes doused in chocolate sauce and sprinkles as you admire the assortment of wall hangings and flags covering every inch of this super-kitsch ice cream parlour.
If monster banana-splits and ice cream sodas float your boat, make sure to book a table at this Miami ice cream institution – the Instagram opportunities are endless!
Private Island Ice cream
For a truly unique experience, don’t miss Orlando’s Private Island Ice Cream, famed for freezing your scoop using liquid nitrogen – before your very eyes! Kids will love choosing their favourite flavours and watching the ice cream take shape. Take your pick from exotic Key lime pie, Mexican chocolate or sumptuous pecan and caramel flavour ices.
The Frieze Ice Cream Factory
A firm favourite among residents and tourists alike since it was established more than 20 years ago, The Frieze Ice Cream Factory close to Miami Beach sells a mouth-watering array of ice creams and sorbets to cool you down.
Like the sound of (vegan-friendly) peanut butter sorbet, or cinnamon and coconut ice cream? Head on down to this friendly neighbourhood gelateria. If you’re planning a celebration while you’re on holiday, be sure to pick up one of the Factory’s top-rated ice cream cakes…
Mrs C’s Gourmet Ice Cream
Also known as Mrs C’s Homemade Ice Cream, this wonderfully quirky family-friendly gelateria on Key Largo is every bit as kitsch as you could wish for. From the ice cream-themed ‘head in the hole’ cut outs, to the stars and stripes flags and vintage posters plastered across the walls, Americana doesn’t get much better than this.
What’s more, the ice cream is pretty good too. Looking for something a little different? Order yourself a ‘malt’ – a milk shake with a dash of malt syrup. Delicious!
Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream
A local institution, Ginther’s Swirls Ice Cream is the sweet treats star of International Drive, Orlando. Open from 11:00am until 10:30pm every day – and with longer opening hours during the summer months – you can satisfy your gelato cravings well past dinnertime.
Priding itself as a small, family-owned business, Ginther’s Swirls offers a warm welcome to its customers and offers a truly mouth-watering selection of gelato. The toppings give this ice creamery the wow factor- choose from chocolate, peanuts, butterscotch, cherries, marshmallows, rainbow sprinkles… The list goes on. Drinks and slushes are also available.
Just a short distance away from SeaWorld and International Drive‘s other top attractions, Ginther’s Swirls is a perfectly-located pit stop for those wanting a sugary pick-me-up. What’s more, for those with a car the restaurant also features a drive-through.
Ample Hills Creamery
This Brooklyn-based ice cream parlour opened its Walt Disney World Resort branch in spring 2016, at the Disney Boardwalk in Lake Buena Vista.
Featuring 16 tantalising flavours, which you’re unlikely to find on the other side of the pond, Ample Hills Creamery‘s vast range of ice cream includes ooey-gooey butter cake (cream cheese and chunks of St Louis-style cake), cotton candy and malty salty pretzel for the more adventurous ice cream connoisseurs.
Ample Hill’s exclusive Walt Disney World Resort ice cream, Sally sells seashells, is a fruity, fluffy blend of orange marshmallow and miniature chocolate shells flavoured with a hint of sea salt.
Fancy a cone, sundae, or milkshake (or perhaps all three?) You’ve come to the right place. You can even take a pint (of ice cream) home with you.
Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, Wizarding World of Harry Potter
With more than 20 delectable ice cream flavours to choose from, including classic sticky toffee, clotted cream and chilli chocolate to tempt you, don’t forget to save room for the other scrumptious goodies Florean Fortescue’s has to offer. Scones, pastries, cookies and even pumpkin juice are readily available.
