Q. Driving Licence Requirements for the USA
Until April 2013, it was against the law for any persons holding a driving licence issued outside the US to drive without holding an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Thanks to a repeal in the law however, it is no longer a compulsory requirement for UK licence holders to apply for a driving permit when on holiday in the State of Florida.
-
Q. Hiring a car in Florida
Although it is not a legal requirement to hold an International Driving Permit (IDP), some car hire and insurance companies can impose their own terms and conditions to their contracts - so it is important that you check with the company before you leave the UK.
-
Q. Before applying for an IDP:
It is still important before you apply, that you check the following conditions:
- In the event of an accident, if your licence does not incorporate a photograph, the licence will need to be accompanied by photographic proof of identity.
- IDP applications cannot be made any more than three months in advance of the date of travel.
- If you are taking up residence or employment in the US, it is important to make personal enquiries to your position before relying on a permit to be approved.
- If there are any errors on your driving licence, or you have changed address, it is important that you notify the DVLA to account for this change.
-
Q. Applying via post
You can download an application form to be printed off, here.
-
Q. Driving licence details
When applying, you must send the form, your driving licence or alternatively, your pass certificate and your provisional licence.
If you are using a photocard licence, you must copy both sides of the card as well as the paper counterpart.
If however, you cannot provide a copy of your UK driving licence (or the practical pass certificate and provisional licence), it is important that you enclose a search fee of £4.00 so that your details can be checked.
Passport Photograph
A recent passport sized picture must also be sent, which is also to be signed by yourself on the back.
Photocopy of your passport
A photocopy of your identification details and photograph pages are also needed for the application.
Also
Remember that when sending the form, you must also enclose the appropriate fee (£8.00 per permit, £5.0 statutory charge, plus £2.50 postal application processing fee).
