You won’t want to leave Florida without having one (or five) burgers during your stay. So here’s a rundown of the top places to chomp on the state’s finest patties – whether that be The Big Sloppy or the Juicy Lucy, a posh vegetarian stack or simply the classic Angus beef burger ‘n’ fries. And if you think that sounded mouth-watering, wait until you read this…
109 Burger Joint
New to the burger scene in 2015, 109 Burger Joint in downtown Miami is the place to be for a chilled-out American diner vibe. Expect the flavours of Latin-American to take centre stage if you’re planning to order a patty with queso frito, jalapeno cream, fried plantain and coleslaw. Alternatively, mac and cheese features high in this burger joint’s ratings, as do the truffle fries.
A well-established burger chain, at BurgerFi you’re guaranteed a seriously mouth-watering all-American classic: the Angus beef patty, tomato, lettuce stacked in a soft white bun. Along with a milkshake and a side of hand-cut fries, you’ll basically be living the American dream. Find BurgerFi at Winter Park, Orlando for those staying in theme park territory, and at another 33 locations across Florida.
Charm City Burger Company
This isn’t any old burger joint… If you’re keen to try something totally new, go for the ahi tuna, sesame-chili spice and wasabi aioli burger. Essentially, a sushi burger. Or if the thought of a breakfast burger fills you with delight, get your hands on the Big Sloppy: double meat, double bacon, double cheese, hash browns and a fried egg.
For those looking for something a little lighter (we’re aware you’ll be metres away from the sunlounger, after all) there’s a great choice of salads and chicken wings. You’ll find Charm City Burger Company on Deerfield Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale.
Quickie’s Burgers and Wings
The quintessential American drive-thru experience, whether you’re taking a road trip or hiring a car, a passing visit to Quickie’s Burgers and Wings in Hollywood, Florida should be on your holiday bucket list. What makes this joint stand apart, however – besides Quickie’s special sauce – is the 4lb burger challenge.
Of course, you’ll need to pop into the dining area to take part in this epic ‘event’, but if you manage to munch your way through this giant patty in 90 minutes you’ll receive the meal for free, a complimentary T-shirt AND your picture on the ‘wall of fame’!
MEAT Eatery and Taproom
Probably the best-known burger joint in the Florida Keys and for good reason, MEAT Eatery and Taproom on the tropical island of Islamorada is a must-visit for burger-lovers visiting the archipelago.
You’ll be given a warm welcome and an eye-wateringly delicious menu featuring duck-fat fries, home-made ketchup and the Juicy Lucy burger â a house favourite, which arrives topped with melting pimento cheese and bacon. Don’t leave without trying at least one of the many craft beers available behind the bar.
Grease Burger Bar
Located in the stunning West Palm Beach area, Grease Burger Bar offers gourmet burgers for those with slightly more discerning tastes – think beef patties topped with spring onions, Swiss and Boursin cheese, a mushroom burgundy reduction, and you get the picture.
There’s a large range of vegetarian options and a good kids menu, too. Sip on tropical cocktails or a chilled beer while you wait for your feast to arrive.
